HISTORY OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE COFFEE TREE IN VIETNAM

Through the article about the history of coffee (origin of coffee) in the world? So when did coffee first appear in Vietnam? And why does it grow so strongly in Vietnam, and which province is the first place where coffee trees appeared in Vietnam? Today we will go with RAINCOFFEE to learn about them.

The origin of Arabica coffee first appeared in Vietnam.
In 1857, coffee trees followed missionary priests to Vietnam, and were first planted in Ha Nam and Bo Trach provinces, Quang Tri province. The first coffee trees (scientific name is Arabica) were grown here. The name coffee is derived from the word "Café" theo (source) in French.

In 1865, the French colonialists invaded our country, they established many coffee plantations in the northern midlands such as Xuan and Son Tay following the shifting cultivation method (Swidden cultivation is the phenomenon of people frequently changing places). living and farming places, living here and there, mainly ethnic minorities in the territory of Vietnam in particular and in the world in general), and at that time the highest productivity in the early years was 400 -500kg/ha. Then it gradually decreased to only 100-150kg/ha (the reason is that the soil here is not suitable).

Robusta coffee and Jackfruit coffee (Excelsa Chari) began to appear in Vietnam

In 1908, France introduced two new types of coffee to Vietnam: Robusta coffee (scientific name C. Robusta) and jackfruit coffee (scientific name C.excelsa Chari) to replace tea coffee (scientific name C.excelsa Chari). scientifically known as Arabica) has low productivity and is not suitable for the soil in this area.
In 1910, new coffee plantations continued to grow in other provinces such as Ha Tinh, Yen My (Thanh Hoa), Nghia Dan (Nghe An).

In 1925 coffee was developed in the Central Highlands (the golden milestone of Vietnamese coffee), then planted in the Southeast provinces such as Binh Phuoc and spread to Dong Nai.

Coffee is grown on a larger scale
In 1937-1938, the total coffee area reached 13,000 hectares, and the output reached 1,500 tons of green coffee.

In 1963, the North planted about 10,000 hectares of coffee on state-owned farms. The coffee grown here is mainly Arabica coffee, with a low yield of about 400-600kg/ha and fertile lands. can achieve 1 ton/ha.

In 1975, the coffee area in the South was about 10,000 hectares, with the most prominent areas being in Dak Lak (7,000 hectares), Lam Dong (1,700 hectares), and Dong Nai (1,300 hectares). The main coffee variety grown here is Robusta coffee. Arabica coffee is mainly grown in Lam Dong.

In 1994, our country's total coffee area reached 150,000 hectares and total output reached 150,000 tons, average yield 1 ton/ha. In fertile soil areas, applying new planting methods and scientific care, productivity can reach 2-3 tons/ha. Especially in many areas, the yield is 8-10 tons/ha.

Vietnam produces from 800,000 - 1 million tons of coffee each year but only consumes about 10%, the rest is mainly raw export.

From 1994 to present, although the government continues to recommend maintaining the country's coffee area at 500,000 hectares, due to the price competitiveness of coffee compared to other crops. But the coffee growing area continues to expand in main areas such as Dak Lak, Lam Dong, and Dak Nong because the soil conditions are considered one of the most suitable lands for coffee.

According to statistics (2017), Vietnam ranks 2nd in coffee production worldwide (total coffee export output is 1,181,811 tons/year), after Brazil (2,859,502 tons/year), and ranks 3rd. is Columbia (892,871 tons/year).
